CHAPTER 15

Fern and I walked up to the school, holding hands and laughing. It felt a little more tolerable going back with her. I had no idea what the mood would be with Trevor's passing. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one looking forward to not having to deal with him, but I'm sure the football team and Valerie might have a different view. I at least had the morals to feel bad that I was happy he was gone. But nobody, and I mean nobody, deserved to get eaten by a bear.

I grabbed the handle of the door and pulled it open for Fern. She slipped inside, and I let it close behind me. Principal Edwards had taken up his usual post by the door, even though we were almost early for once. I briefly wondered if he stood there all morning.

"Morning, sir," I said, and walked past him.

"How are you feeling?"

"Better, now that I got my stitches out."

He nodded, not commenting on my miraculous recovery. "I'm also sorry to hear about your father. You had a rough week."

"Just a little. Here's hoping for a better one."

"Stay out of trouble," he said, and went back to watching the entrance.

Fern tugged on my hand, dragging me away from the principal. I think she was a little uncomfortable in his presence. I didn't blame her; she hadn't had the most illustrious school career. The dean probably flinched whenever he saw her.

"He's pretty nice for a principal," I told her as we walked down the hall toward homeroom.

"Still the principal. They're evil."

I chuckled softly enough that she couldn't hear me. Most people probably thought the same thing about her. I didn't because I knew her, but most people probably wouldn't have warm and cozy feelings for someone who set fire to Santa's Village.

A few people in the halls openly stared at us as we made our way to class, but nobody spoke to us. The group of cheerleaders standing in a semicircle, sans Valerie, shot us contemptuous glances and whispered. One of them even frantically tapped on the keys of her phone screen.

"Hurry," Fern said worriedly, as if she could sense the calm before the storm.

"Relax. Everything will be okay," I whispered like I actually believed the words coming out of my mouth.

We made it into homeroom without incident. It almost felt surreal. It had been that long since Fern and I had been to school together. I got her settled at her desk and sat in mine, flipping through my phone.

I'm bored. It had taken all of two minutes for Fern to text me from across the room.

Homeroom is quick. We'll be in English Lit soon. At least we'll be next to each other.

They're staring.

I looked up and, sure enough, the entire class was either staring at Fern or looking at me.

"What?" I asked the entire class.

They all turned around and found things that could qualify as interesting on their desks. I sighed in frustration. Finally, Mr. Johnson came in and things relaxed.
